Susan lives in LA and is a writer, actress and comedienne.
I love her honesty in dealing with real life problems. In a response to my feeling that as a Christian, "Life aint fair!", she responded,
"I don't know if we'll ever understand why things happen the way that they do. In fact it probably becomes less understandable. I think the faith I was raised with, there was going to be an answer for everything, and a happy ending TO everything. Boy was I wrong about that.
There does seem to be a correlation between spiritual maturity and pain.
But the alternative, no pain also brings spiritual death. I've seen that a lot as well.
I know I can also write off my spiritual pain as Maturity when I'm really just making stupid choices. I also realized I spent a lot of time numbing myself with food, alcohol, even cigarettes, instead of facing the hard stuff.
It just never gets easy.
Madame Guyon wrote something like, "I have learned to love the darkness, because in the darkness I can see the brightness of His face." She was a shut-in or a prisoner. It's these great saints who've been through HELL who come up with these bon-mots. I feel like such a spiritual dwarf compared to them. And yet we've been fed a lot of bad teaching in the midst of it.
